Monday 17th August - Walk ***** - Ramsholt Church to the Rocks to see the famous Suffolk Spoonbills – sunny and hot.

After getting the bug again for staying away in our lovely little VW campervan on the banks of the River Stour we had another opportunity. So, we had a morning at home before quickly getting the van ready Mag and I drove to Ipswich Hospital to visit my Dad, boy is it hot wearing a mask! Then we drove over to Ramsholt Church to park in their car park with top views down to the River Deben, our aim to walk down to the lagoons to see the famous flock of Suffolk Spoonbills, the most photographed birds in these parts! We left the van at four through the church yard, it is a lovely old church with its round tower and down the hill through the wetland meadows spotting a resting Kestral to the River Deben path. The tide was well out and you can’t beat river mud with its feeding birds! We were not sure where the spoonbills have been spotted but they were not in the first section, just a family of swans. You then get to Craigpit Plantation a pretty little woodland coming out at the start of a large area of shallow fresh water, ideal for a wide variety of birds. We thought we spotted the spoonbills but they turned out to be a large group of Little Egrets plus large numbers of waders including lapwings, Godwits, Dunlins and Red Shanks with herons, ducks and gulls:) Then half way down the lagoon we spotted at least four spoonbills so continued along till we were level with them and although they are a distance away we were treated to a fine display, especially a youngster chasing its parent around for a meal:) These are the first ever Spoonbills we have seen here in the UK and they are a very special sight with their huge bills! We did get a bit damp as we had a quick burst of rain but the sun soon came back as we continued to the next small wood at the Rocks, a popular sheltered mooring spot for yachts with a lovely secluded beach. We turned at the end of the beach and returned with the sun dropping causing some nice evening colours. There was a small pop-up farm camp site at the back of the rocks and there were a few people making their way to the Ramsholt Arms for a meal on foot and on bikes! After a nice Lidl lasagne we were treated to a sunset behind the church and we were left to enjoy the peace and quiet of the Suffolk countryside:)
